Fishing around Anna Maria Island has continued to follow a wintertime pattern for yet another few weeks. Although this is nothing new, spring doesn’t arrive until March for us. So we are dealing with it for a few more weeks.As the water temperatures both in the bay and in the golf of Mexico are struggling to reach the upper 50s on nice days. Fishing has been surprisingly good for Anna Maria island fishing in february.
On the calm days, when the wind is 10 knots or less, we are fishing hard bottom off the beaches of Anna Maria Island. With steady action of pompano, whitening, sheepshead, black drum, and snapper. With even an occasional redfish or trout out there. As a result this season so far has been a lot of fun for all of my clients and I. They love the change and style of fishing considering we usually only get six or seven weeks of this kind of fishing. On most trips we are using a live shrimp with a 1/4 ounce of Jig head. The Jig head is then worked slowly around hard bottom areas. As most people know we don’t always have a beautiful day to fish this time of year. Its been just that… beautiful for Anna Maria island fishing in February.
So on the windy days we are fishing way up in the Manatee River catching redfish, black drum and a few sheep head. The river fishing this year has not been so good as years past for me. We are only doing this when we just can’t make it out on the beach. March is going to be here in just a few weeks. That means it’s going to be back to catching bait every day.
